GLAAD, an LGBT “advocacy” group, recently launched a “successful” campaign to remove the use of transphobic references on RuPaul’s Drag Race. In particular the “Ooh, girl! You got she-mail!” was edited to only say “Ooh, girl!” starting episode nine of Season six … as LogoTV succumb to the protest.
Frankly? I think it’s bullshit. It’s completely taken out of context. And it’s stupid. RuPaul is anything BUT transphobic. He has done a pretty good job at educating the public about drag, LGBT issues, and real struggles of the LGBT people … including transgender folks. I believe his show has single-handedly made it possible to talk about gay topics openly without fear of being judged or prosecuted more than any mother-effin gay shows out there. He has consistently demonstrated that it’s okay to be different … and not take oneself too seriously. His show celebrates the beauty and talent of the LGBT folk … and that’s why RuPaul’s Drag Race is a HUGE success. It’s successful at delivering its message.
Whenever I go to gigs featuring RuPaul’s Drag Race cast, it’s amazing to see the kind of support these queens are getting … from gay or straight people. And never, at any point in my years of following the show and gigs, has ONE fan come up to a drag queen and say … “I’m offended by the use of ‘she-mail‘ on the show!” NEVER!
The word “she-mail” on the show is good for the LGBT community. It makes people think and ask questions. It’s a catalyst … for something good! It opens up discussion and education!
For GLAAD to nitpick on RuPaul’s show and take this whole thing out of context is dead wrong! To me, as an LGBT folk, I find it very disconcerting … they’re doing a lot more harm than good. It’s a HUGE disservice to the LGBT community as a whole. Now, we all come across as UPTIGHT people who have to be politically correct all the time… that it’s no longer OKAY to express ourselves because some nitwit is going to get upset.
I think GLAAD should try choose REAL issues instead of picking on something so trivial. It’s even spelled “she-mail” … notice there’s a hyphen in there? RuPaul’s Drag Race, and drag in general, loves to play with words … so many drag names are a testament to this … i.e. Detox Icunt, Jiz Zelle, so are we gonna start censoring those too because some idiot’s feelings is gonna get hurt?
GLAAD … good god gurl get a grip!
RuPaul’s Drag Race should edit the infamous phrase back into Season 6 … and re-introduced in Season 7. Frankly, I ain’t buying any Drag Race bluray without it.
