“RuPaul’s Drag Race – Untucked” move to YouTube could be taken in so many ways. But I am not very particular about the delivery as long as I can watch it.
First of all, I hope this will be made available to international viewers. Unlike the release of just-“aired” episodes of Drag Race on the LogoTV.com where it’s only available to internet users in the United States. I do find this regional restriction ancient and irrelevant. Licensing, ads, whatever the reason … this needs to be ironed out somehow. Anyone who knows how digital media spreads worldwide these days, knows that this restrictive distribution method is pointless. And I do believe content providers are poised to lose more.
Second, I wonder if LogoTV didn’t pick up the “Untucked” edition, and that’s why World Of Wonders made this move. Could this also be the reason why Drag Race was pushed a month late compared to the previous seasons which usually airs in February? I recall people where talking about Drag Race Season 7 was supposed to be aired in January. Or perhaps this change is just a matter of programming, and that LogoTV is just swamped right now. Oh, speculation mode is through the roof!
Lastly, it makes sense to move to YouTube or to any digital streaming channel for that matter. The days of cable television are numbered. Streamed on-demand content is the future. I frankly don’t mind how World of Wonder will monetize this, perhaps, that’s why YouTube makes sense … because of the in stream ads. It’s a good business model. Maybe someday RuPaul will have his own independently hosted digital delivery portal. That would be cool. Not sure if it’s practical to manage … hence, YouTube makes sense, for now.
I’m so looking forward to this!
