I’m sure there will be plenty of happy tears this Pride season everywhere in the US. The US Supreme Court voted today 5-4 in favor of gay marriage in the USA. It is historic!
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court declared Friday that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States, a historic culmination of decades of litigation over gay marriage and gay rights generally.
Gay and lesbian couples already could marry in 36 states and the District of Columbia. The court’s 5-4 ruling means the remaining 14 states, in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans on same-sex marriage. (Full story)
I have to say this, this is something that will NEVER happen in a Bush administration or Republican government. But all grudges aside, this is monumental. The US joins the ranks of other countries who allow gay marriage, including Canada. What does this mean to the world? History shows countries who revere the USA often times follow its footsteps be it economy, entertainment, or war. This will be no different. Hopefully, this is the tipping point for LGBT in other countries are waiting for, who are still fighting for marriage equality, and even decriminalization of LGBT, to finally make that cultural and political shift to do the right thing.
And just this week Obamacare, USA’s young universal health care, also earned its victory.
I’m so proud of the USA, my third home, for all the right moves! Well done.
Congrats!!! And welcome to the club!
