It goes both ways, white-to-people of color and vise versa. It may have played a role in this case of mistaken identity. But more than anything else, it’s the accuracy of Britney Spears’ drag impersonator Derrick Barry as “Britney Spears” that got Vogue Japan mistook her for the real pop princess.

This is not Derrick Barry’s first time being misidentified as the “Oops I Did It Again” singer. A renowned online magazine in the UK also mistakenly used Barry’s drag photo in a Britney Spears article. Britney Spears impersonation sums up Derrick Barry’s drag career. She has appeared on reality television competition shows such as “America’s Got Talent” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” as a professional Britney Spears impersonator. And she is pretty damn good at it too. At times her Britney is better than the real Britney’s Britney. Think about that for minute.

So when Vogue Japan mistook her for the real Britney, it comes as no surprise. It’s simply an updated “validation” that her craft is still in the zone.
